In our first exclusive interview we speak to the ridiculously talented and hella cool Guy Dishington, the lead vocalist of Satanik Panik and we get him to tell us just who his favourite influential artists are!
” Hi, I’m Guy. I’m responsible for about eighty percent of the Australian recording project Satanik Panik. I’m very grateful to be given this spot to talk about some of the influences that most clearly shape my music.
Top 5 artists who influence Satanik Panik (in no particular order).
No. 1: Chvrches
Why you love them: I tend to have poetic phrases or complex ideas rattling around in my head for months; sometimes even years. Or maybe it’s just something I find so valuable to think about that I need to rework it, make it pithy and digestible. Inevitably, I’ll be listening to Chvrches and my own thoughts will cascade together into lyrics ignited by their melodies. They’re masters of vocal melody so I just can’t help it. It all becomes my own when those lyrics meet my music.
Recent favourite song: Good Girls
No. 2: Gunship
Why you love them: I’m a total sucker for dark, dreamy pads and pretty arpeggios. To me, Gunship totally embodies this. It’s common for me to lose myself in their constellations of synth hypnotism and high energy hooks, only to again lose myself to songwriting shortly thereafter.
Recent favourite song: Woken Furies
No. 3: Skynd
Why you love them: I’m rebellious, rude and I have a chip on my shoulder. It’s just my nature to live my life with extended middle fingers. As a result I don’t get out much, or I’ll just get in trouble. Skynd has a similar level of attitude which I find extremely inspiring. Though as a result, if you’re thematically sensitive, I would consider this a gigantic trigger warning for pretty much every possible reason.
Recent favourite song: John Wayne Gacy
No. 4: 3 Teeth
Why you love them: I grew up with mid-nineties industrial metal and it’s clear when you hear my music. It’s also not a conscious choice; rather, it’s just what I’ve internalised. The best modern example of amazing industrial metal is, in my opinion, 3 Teeth. Their vocalist’s tone is equal parts caustic sarcasm and spite. It’s fantastic. Their dense production style will also cause spontaneous moshing syndrome.
Recent favourite song: Paralyze (Feat. Ho99o9)
No. 5: The Birthday Massacre
Why you love them: When it comes to writing my own music, the kind of guitar work that inspires me most is actually a sound that is intentionally crafted to accompany synths. Here, I present The Birthday Massacre. They’ve been doing this for years, and they’re masters of this craft. Their guitars wonderfully compliment their synth layers and create a dense, dark, but dreamlike atmosphere that is perfectly complemented by haunting, often innocent-sounding vocals. While there are no real guitars in my music, I reference their music when I’m trying to get my production to sound just right.
